Activation procedure for curricular/optional internships
The practical internship is a period of professional training undertaken in a company, professional firm or public/private body that has a special agreement with the Politecnico di Milano, in Italy or abroad.
The intership may be curricular (compulsory) or optional.
The RAP deals with curricular internships and optional internships undertaken before graduation.
The Career Service deals with optional graduate internships (Bachelor and Master).
Curricular Internships
This is undertaken in the 2nd year of the Master degree program and confers 18 credits (15 for the Design&Engineering program).
The duration of the compulsory placement is 250 hours (this may increase to 375 hours if the structure employs at least 1 person on a permanent contract). This does not apply to interships abroad.
The student may choose where to do his/her placement autonomously through personal contacts, professors’ contacts, or through the Career Service notice board online.
Students may also refer to the RAP office, which will check availability of the company offers received.
The structure proposed by the student must already have an agreement with the Politecnico di Milano, or sign an agreement before the placement starts.
The structure proposed must be approved by the RAP office.
Once the agreement has been activated the student will receive the traineeship project by email. This must be signed by the student, the company tutor and the tutor from the Politecnico.
Details of the procedure for activating and returning the traineeship project will be included in the email.
Politecnico tutors are assigned according to Course of Study.
(Prof. Francesco Scullica for Interior Design, Prof. Davide Fassi for Product Service System Design, Prof. Giovanni Contifor Fashion Design, Prof.Francesco Guida for Communication Design, Prof.Stefania Palmieri for Product Design, Prof.Roberta Gorno for Design&Engineering.)
Students may not start their internship until their traineeship project has been signed by all three parties involved (student, Politecnico tutor, company tutor) and activated by the RAP office.
Optional Internship
The optional internship can be undertaken at any moment during the university course and up to 12 months after graduation.
It is the student’s responsibility to find a structure willing to welcome him/her as a trainee.
It is the student ‘s responsibility to find a professor from the Politecnico willing to act as his/her academic tutor.
The maximum duration of the curricular and optional student internship together is 12 months.
The structure proposed by the student must already have an agreement with the Politecnico di Milano, or sign an agreement before the placement starts.
The structure proposed must be approved by the RAP office.
Once the agreement has been drawn up the student will receive the traineeship project by email and can start the placement.
Details of the procedure for activating and returning the traineeship project will be included in the email.
Politecnico tutors are assigned according to Course of Study.
Students may not start their placement until their traineeship project has been signed by all three parties involved (student, Politecnico tutor, company tutor) and activated by the RAP office.
Internships abroad
Internships may be undertaken anywhere in the world.
It will be necessary to assess their feasibility on the basis of university courses.
Procedures for choosing, agreements with companies, traineeship project etc. are the same as those for placements carried out in Italy.
The Italian regulation relative to number of employees and trainees does not apply abroad.
As for Italy, any funding (expense reimbursement, canteen, study allowance etc.) will be at the discretion of the host structure.
Those deciding to undertake their placement abroad are advised to make their CV and portfolio available online (in English), creating a mini website or using file sharing services.
It is advisable to act well in advance, before the period scheduled for your placement because:
- It may take time to find a placement abroad
- It may take longer to draw up an agreement than it does in Italy
- You may need to produce additional documentation (e.g. travel visa etc.)
- Companies abroad often plan traineeships well in advance.
Students on exchange programs have the following options (see teaching regulations or ask the promoter teacher):
1. Internship in exchange Erasmus / Non-EU / double degree with agreement between the Company and partner universities
RAP have to do anything more. The internship follow the procedures of the partner school and is inserted in the transcript of records by the university partner. Validation is done by the promoter teacher.
2. Internship Erasmus exchange / non-EU (NOT DOUBLE DEGREE) replaced with design courses (250 hours)
The student doesn’t make any internship but follows design courses / workshops to the partner school. Validation is done by the promoter teacher.
3. Internship in exchange Erasmus / Non-EU / double degree without agreement between the Company and partner universities
RAP is the main contact. The student must follow the same procedures of other students (with RAP), including the final interview that they will do with the Academic Tutor.
4. Undertake their internship after returning to Italy.
The application procedures and timing for LLP Erasmus are different.
