2013: for the fifth year, ISIA Urbino / Werkplaats Typografie Summer School requires students or professionals in the field of design, or art related practices. We are calling for talented, inspiring, non-conventional candidates, with an authentic and critical mind, who don’t mind to work over summer, instead of sunbathing.
During the two week workshop you will be guided by Karel Martens, Armand Mevis, Maureen Mooren and Leonardo Sonnoli. They will encourage you to work on a theme in relation to it’s specific context. In the past we focused on ‘Language and the translation of language’ (2012), ‘Time and the preservation of time’ (2011), ‘Urbino, the ideal city’
(2010) and on ‘Urbino’s cultural identity’ (2009). For 2013 the theme still needs to be defined, which we will only tell once you arrive in Urbino. The topics might sound heavy, the way how you approach them is completely free. Since it’s a Summer School (and not a real school, wth creditpoints, a diploma, etc., but still it is set in a school building),
you should also look at it from the sunny side. We would like to see you having a good time and do the project in your way. The medium is free, and it would be nice if you would try new things and are not afraid to make your best or worst work ever. Like in the past you will be part of an international group of students, coming from all over.
If your work during the Summer School isn’t the best part, then it’s definitely meeting your new fellow students and share this once in a lifetime experience with them. The Summer School is taking place at the only bachelor school solely devoted to graphic design. ISIA Urbino is set in a renaissance building in the centre of Urbino, a small and beautifully preserved renaissance town in the centre of Italy.
You can be lodged in the impressive university campus by the brutalist architect Giancarlo de Carlo, set outside the old city centre, on the nearby hills of Urbino, and within walking distance. You don’t need a car in this town, but a pair of good legs to walk the steep streets of Urbino. Urbino can be easily reached by a direct local busservice from
the nearby train station of Pesaro. You can take an international flight directly to one of the nearest towns of Bologna and Ancona, or take a flight to, Rome, Milan, or Venice and take the train from there to Pesaro.
We are looking forward to welcome you in Urbino.
