STUDY PLAN
How should the Study Plan be filled out, and by when?
he Study Plan should be submitted at the start of each academic year in the time period established by the School according to the year of enrolment. Check the calendar on the website http://www.design-old.polimi.it/wp-content/uploads/Calendario_DESIGN-2014-15_finale2.pdf
I didn’t finish my Study Plan in time; what should I do now?
The Study Plan will be automatically registered with a maximum of 60 credits, according to specific rules on course precedence. You will be charged a € 100.00 default payment at the time of paying the second instalment.
In the second semester, can I make changes to the Study Plan I presented at the beginning of the year?
No changes are allowed. The Study Plan remains valid for the year.
Why has my Study Plan not been approved yet?
You do not need to wait for your Study Plan to be approved. If you have entered the recommended Plan, it will be validated automatically.
I wish to sit a remedial examination for a course taken in the 2nd semester of the previous academic year, in the February examination session. Do I need to include this exam in my Study Plan for the new academic year?
Yes, if you are registered in a three-year Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science). Once you have passed the exam, this will automatically be registered as a course of the previous academic year. If you pass the exam, it will not be included in the calculation of the ECTS to be paid for in the second instalment.
No, if you are enrolled in a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science), as you are considered as having already sat it. Please read the Career Guide http://www.polimi.it/uploads/media/Guida_Carriera_2013_01.pdf
What are “extra examinations”?
When preparing your Study Plan, you will be allowed to enter “extra” courses, which may also be chosen from other study programmes, for up to a total of 30 ECTS. These courses are not obligatory, and you do not need to pass them to sit your degree exam. Extra exams can become effective exams, just as effective exams can become extra exams. Their inclusion in your Study Plan will result in their inclusion in the calculation of university contributions payable. Furthermore, they do not contribute to your average score.
What does self-certification of courses mean?
This means declaring any exams that have effectively been passed but do not yet appear in your academic record.
Why can’t I see the exams in my Study Plan, even though I entered them?
Why can’t I enter my Study Plan?
The session is probably not open because it is not the right time for entering Study Plans. Check by consulting the academic calendar.
Where can I find information to help you select the sections of preference, when presenting the study plan of Laurea Magistrale?
You can consult the Study Manifesto online, accessible from the site of the School of Design www.design-old.polimi.it/manifesto-degli-studi or at this link www4.ceda.polimi.it/manifesti/manifesti/controller/ManifestoPublic.do nd carefully read the teaching programs, selecting sections from the menu and clicking on the icon of every single teaching module.
OFA (Additional Educational Obligations)
How can I make up for English OFAs after I enrol?
You may make up for English OFAs during the academic year by sitting the remedial English OFA test (TENG) and earning a score of at least 24, or by presenting an English language proficiency certificate of at least the medium/low B1 level, in accordance with the parameters indicated in Table 1 of the Guide to English Language Requirements.
When are OFAs made up?
Remedial exam sessions are held every month. The Registrar’s Office will send an email to your university email account with information on registering for these sessions through the Online Services > Test Registration, Check Results, Enrolment, Registration for OFA and TENG Sessions.
ATTENDANCE, EXAM PRECEDENCE, MANDATORY EXAMS
Which exams are mandatory?
The second year workshops of all study programmes may be entered in the Study Plan provided the first year workshops have all been passed.
If I do not pass all the first year exams, can I include the Final Synthesis Workshop in my Study Plan?
No, you must have passed all the exams of the first year courses.
EXAMS
How do I register to take exams?
By logging in with your credentials to the Online Services and clicking on “Exams”. Remember to register by the deadline. After registration has closed, you can no longer register.
Why does one exam not appear in my records?
Usually the reasons are:
- it is suspended because you have outstanding tuition fees
- the professor has not completed the report
- you had not registered for the exam
When are exam sessions and assessment tests held? How are they conducted?
Testing periods are scheduled by the School and indicated in the academic calendar.
PLACEMENTS AND INTERNSHIPS
In what facilities may I perform a placement?
In Italy and abroad, in studios, agencies, companies, associations, laboratories and research units within Universities (only curricular internships), also during the course of international exchange projects (Erasmus, non-EU exchanges, etc.), either in facilities already affiliated with the Politecnico or by proposing new ones.
By participating in the Erasmus Placement call for applications, you can also apply for a scholarship to conduct a placement abroad at the Politecnico’s partner universities.
What procedure do I need to follow to formalise a placement/internship?
For placements, turn to the RAP Corporate Relations Office (for curricular and optional pre-graduation placements) or the Career Service (for optional post- graduation internships). Embarking on a curricular or optional placement is simple, but to avoid any problems, and as it is not possible to start a placement if you have not followed the appropriate procedures, it is advisable to get started reasonably early.
The student PROPOSES a company/professional studio/body by SENDING AN EMAIL to the RAP OFFICE rap@ceda.polimi.it (to this end, you MUST use your university email address: name.surname@mail.polimi.it) with the following information:
• Student details (name, student ID number and study programme)
• Company details (name, VAT no.)
• Company contact information (name, email address)
• Type of placement (curricular, both internal and external; optional; in Italy; abroad)
If the company is NOT affiliated with the Politecnico, the RAP Office will send the student details of the documentation and procedures required to formalise affiliation with the University.
Alternatively, the company will be invited to enter the training project online and the student will receive a contract (training project), which he/she must return to the RAP Office in triplicate copy bearing the original signature of the student and the company tutor.
For curricular placements, the academic tutor is assigned automatically, while for optional placements, the student must select a tutor from among the professors of the Politecnico.
Can I apply for a foreign placement?
Certainly, anywhere in the world. The procedure is the same, whether the company is in Italy or abroad. Alternatively, you can participate in the Erasmus Placement call for applications (through the Career Service), which allows you to apply for a scholarship to conduct a placement abroad at the Politecnico’s partner universities. If conducted during Erasmus/Non-EU exchange projects in companies already affiliated with the host university, the student must follow the procedures of the said university. If the company is not affiliated with the host university, the student must contact the RAP Office and follow the standard formalisation procedure.
Where can I find a list of companies affiliated with the Politecnico?
There is no list available, as affiliated companies are registered in the Career Service’s portal, where they publish their internship offers, as needed.
How can I find out if a company I wish to propose is already affiliated with the Politecnico?
Email the Rap Office, specifying the name of the company and its VAT number.
Does the contract (training project) provide insurance cover?
Yes, which is the reason why the placement must be officially formalised, providing the RAP Office with the contract signed by the student, university tutor and company tutor before the placement starts.
Who is responsible for the placement insurance?
The Politecnico di Milano is responsible for taking out insurance against the risk of accidents and civil liability.
What expenses will the company incur to become affiliated with the Politecnico di Milano?
The new facility will have to pay 4 revenue stamps worth €16.00 to formalise the affiliation.
What is the duration, in hours, of an internship?
Curricular internships may last anything from a minimum of 250 hours (in facilities without employed workers) to a maximum of 375 hours (in facilities with at least one employed worker).
If you want to extend the duration of the placement, you must formalise a new optional placement for a maximum duration of 12 months.
Optional placements may last from 90 hours to 12 months.
Can I extend a curricular placement?
It is possible to extend curricular placements if the 250 hour limit has not been reached. It is also possible to formalise a subsequent optional internship for the total duration of 12 months (curricular + optional).
Can I interrupt a placement?
Yes, but only for serious and documented reasons and only after notifying the RAP Office. In the case of curricular placements, if you have not reached the minimum number of hours, the hours carried out cannot be recovered and you must commence a new placement of at least 250 hours.
I would like the work I am doing to be recognised. How can I go about it?
You should write directly to the RAP Office for details: rap@ceda.polimi.it
I was offered a placement from home. Is this allowed?
No. Placements must take place in the workplace, where you must have a workstation, a company computer, a tutor, etc.
The company tutor has been replaced, the studio is relocating, I have to travel, the assignment has been changed… what should I do?
Inform the RAP Office by email of any change in the training project.
Can a previous internship with no contract be validated as a curricular internship?
No. In the absence of a Training Project, no insurance cover is provided.
Can I replace the third year workshop with an in-company internship?
The 3rd year workshop can be replaced by extra curricular training activities such as placements formalised with the support of the RAP Office. The replacement request must be lodged before the start of the extra curricular activity and before the start of the semester relating to the course for which you require validation. Please email the RAP Office to request the documentation to be submitted.
I have passed the final interview with the academic tutor and sent a PDF of the documents to the placement office, but I cannot see the credits registered in my academic record. What should do I do?
Check with the RAP Office.
Who do I need to sit the final interview with for a curricular placement?
Students should contact the academic tutor assigned automatically according to the study programme (email the RAP Office for the dates when individual professors are available for interviews). After the placement ends, the student has one month to arrange an interview with the academic tutor and submit the material produced to be discussed during the interview. The documentation to be submitted is as follows: student evaluation sheet, company evaluation sheet, final report. The documents are sent directly to the student’s university email address by the RAP Office.
ELECTIVES
How many electives do I need to choose?
You must choose four electives, in order of preference.
How is the merit list calculated?
he merit list is based on the average score and the number of ECTS achieved on 31 July each year. The average score is calculated by applying the formula sum(score*ECTS)/sum(ECTS), taking into account the courses specified with the entry parameters
Can I ask to change from an assigned elective to another of my liking?
You cannot change from an assigned elective to another of your liking because the allocation is based on a merit list.
