GUIDANCE – ENTRANCE TEST
When will the entrance test for study programmes of the School of Design be held?
In a few months time you will find all the information detailing the terms and conditions of enrolment for A.Y. 2015/2016 on the “Dates of the Design entrance test and enrolment” section of the PoliOrientaMi website – http://www.poliorientami.polimi.it/
How should I prepare for the entrance test?
To prepare for the Design entrance test, you should first of all use the textbooks used in high school. The questions take into account the national syllabus for Italian secondary schools. You can also prepare using the textbooks used in scientific high schools for the questions on Geometry, and textbooks used in art high schools for the questions on History of Art and Design, Drawing and Representation. You can also use the Online Demo to train for the Design test. Finally, we have published several videos of meetings on the Design test that took place in recent months at the Milan Bovisa Campus, on the PoliOrientaMi website – http://www.poliorientami.polimi.it/come-si-accede/test-di-design/come-prepararsi-al-test-di-design/video-dellincontro-di-approfondimento-sul-test-di-design/
Is attendance mandatory?
Attendance is mandatory for all workshops and for many single-topic courses. If you know that you will be unable to attend a course “full time”, you may spread out your study programme over more years, according to your own requirements and the time you can dedicate to your studies, submitting a request (through presentation of an obligatory annual Study Plan) to attend courses worth a variable number of academic credits (ECTS), no lower than 30 and no higher than 80; the amount of tuition fees and university contributions payable will vary in proportion to the number of credits you request.

INDIVIDUAL COURSES
What are individual courses?
The Politecnico di Milano allows you to attend lectures and sit assessment tests of individual courses without being enrolled in a study programme. Attending individual courses allows you to supplement your personal training and gain the necessary curricular integrations to enrol in a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science).
What are the requirements to enrol in individual courses?
To enrol in individual courses, you must hold a high school diploma.
How many credits do I need to enrol?
If you wish to supplement your personal training, enrolment is permitted for up to a maximum of 32 ECTS per academic year. If you have applied to be admitted to/assessed for a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) and you have been assigned curricular supplements, you may enrol for up to 80 ECTS. Look up individual courses – http://www.poliorientami.polimi.it/come-si-accede/corsi-singoli/
Can I attend individual courses to supplement my personal training?
You can sign up for an individual course either out of cultural interest or to pass specific exams in order to be admitted to public competitions. Recognition of individual course exams for subsequent enrolment in a Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science) or a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) will be subject to the assessment of specific study programme committees.
What are the conditions for enrolment?
Enrolment in individual courses is incompatible with enrolment in a Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science), a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) or a degree under the old educational system, either at the Politecnico di Milano or another Italian university; it is however compatible with enrolment in a Specialising Master at the Politecnico di Milano.
When can I enrol?
View the Guide to Individual Courses.
ACCESS TO A LAUREA MAGISTRALE
When should I apply for admission?
Admission to a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) is permitted both in the 1st semester (September session) and in the 2nd semester (February session), the latter with limitations for some Laurea Magistrale courses due to the assignment of supplements or the attendance of 1st semester courses. With regard to Interior Design and Product Design for Innovation, if 1st semester supplements are assigned, admission to the 2nd semester is not allowed; admission to the 2nd semester for the Laurea Magistrale in Design & Engineering is only allowed for students, deriving from courses that either do or do not provide continuity with the first-level qualification, who have already attended the following individual courses: 1st semester courses, the Product Development Design Studio 1 workshop and the course ‘Materials selection criteria in design & engineering’.
If I have achieved the parameters N (acquired credits) and V (weighted average), must I still apply for admission?
Even those admitted by law, having achieved the N and V parameters, must submit the online application form. There is no need to upload any documentation, however students must hand their language proficiency certification in to the Registrar’s Office. At the end of the second year of enrolment in a Politecnico di Milano study programme, the Information System calculates the N and V parameters for each student, providing the number of ECTS acquired (N) and the weighted average (V). These parameters are used by the Schools to identify values above which a student is admitted to a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) without the need for evaluation. For the School of Design, these parameters are: N = 110 ECTS acquired; V = weighted average of 26. Those in possession of these parameters do not have to submit documentation for evaluation purposes.
Do I have to apply for admission if I am enrolled in the MEDES project?
Those enrolled in the MEDES project must still apply for admission and meet the language and graduation score admission requirements.
What are the requirements to register for evaluation?
• The following students are not admitted to a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science):
• graduate students of the Politecnico di Milano School of Design having obtained a graduation score that is less than or equal to 85/110*;
• graduate students of the Politecnico di Milano, from a School other than the School of Design, having obtained a graduation score that is less than or equal to 90/110;
• graduate students of other Italian universities, having obtained a graduation score that is less than or equal to 95/110.
*) Graduate students of the Politecnico di Milano School of Design with a Laurea (equivalent to a Bachelor of Science) in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Engineering, having obtained a graduation score that is less than or equal to 85/110, are not admitted to the Interschool Laurea Magistrale in Design & Engineering.
• Applicants without a proper English proficiency certification cannot apply for admission to a Laurea Magistrale. English language proficiency, at the levels indicated by the University, is a prerequisite for evaluation. In the absence of such certifications, applications will be disregarded (even if the course provides continuity with the first-level qualification).
When do I need to submit the language proficiency certification?
The English language proficiency certificate should be submitted within the term for registration for evaluation. Applications will not be evaluated if the language certification has not been submitted to the Registrar’s Office, regardless of whether or not the course provides continuity with the first-level qualification. Applicants who have to pass curricular supplements will also only be evaluated if their language proficiency certification has been submitted. For the verification of certifications and the relating scores, see the University regulations.
If I have not come from a design school, what should I enter online instead of the portfolio?
Students who have not graduated from a design school should submit an abstract of their thesis instead of a design portfolio. This document must be uploaded along with the other documents required for evaluation.
What are curricular supplements?
Admission to a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to a Master of Science) that does not provide continuity with the first-level qualification may result in the assignment of curricular supplements. To enrol in the Laurea Magistrale, the applicant needs to complete this supplementary training by enrolling in the specified individual courses. On passing these courses, the university will automatically reserve a place for the applicant, who may enrol at the first enrolment session. On presenting the Study Plan, students can in the meantime follow Laurea Magistrale courses for up to a maximum of 32 credits.
How many places are made available in the 2nd semester?
The number of places made available in the 2nd semester for each Laurea Magistrale depends on the number not taken up in the September session. Every year, in November, the School publishes a notice indicating the places available.
Can I ask to be transferred from one Laurea Magistrale course to another?
Transfer requests may be submitted every year, in September. The School will only consider such requests if the Laurea Magistrale to which the student wishes to transfer provides continuity with his/her first-level qualification; such transfers will be granted up to the maximum number of places available, specified annually.
If I already have a Specialising Master, can I ask for some of the Laurea Magistrale courses to be validated?
On submitting their application, applicants must take care to indicate any Specialising Master qualifications in their CV. At the time of publishing the results of the applications for admission to a Laurea Magistrale, students will be notified of any course validations approved by the Judging Panel.
Where can I find information to help you select the sections of preference, when presenting the study plan of Laurea Magistrale?
You can consult the Study Manifesto online, accessible from the site of the School of Design www.design-old.polimi.it/manifesto-degli-studi or at this link www4.ceda.polimi.it/manifesti/manifesti/controller/ManifestoPublic.do nd carefully read the teaching programs, selecting sections from the menu and clicking on the icon of every single teaching module.
